How To Find the Perfect Wedding Videographer For You
What’s Your Favourite Wedding Videographer Style
First things first, before diving into the endless minefield of wedding videographers, ask yourself this question ‘what’s your favourite wedding videography Style?‘ Choosing a style will instantly help narrow down your search criteria.
Different wedding videography styles include
Music Montage:
This style usually offers a short highlight film to the music. This is standard for lower-budget videographers as the filming and editing tend to be rather basic.
Not a great deal of expertise is needed to create these montage wedding films. Though they can still bring back memories of the wedding day, they can fall a little short of recreating the real emotion of the day.
Fusion Films:
Some companies offer ‘Fusion Edits’ which are basically when both short video clips and photos are combined. The photographer takes the pictures and will capture some video moments during the day.
Again, this tends to be on the lower budget end of the scale. A cool slideshow-style film of your day can be achieved if you’re done well. One thing to remember if you go for this option, the photographer/videographer can only do one or the other. So, if he’s filming the first kiss, for instance, he may be unable to capture a photo of that special moment simultaneously.
Marryoke:
This is for those couples who want to add some fun to their day. Marryoke is where the couple and their guests make lots of different video clips throughout the day, miming to a chosen song. The clips are then blended to create the end film.
Done well, this can be extremely funny and entertaining. But you will rely on your guests getting really into it. Plus, as it does take some organizing, you will have to put a good bit of time from your day into making it work.
Here at Boutique Wedding Films, our clients tend to want a more relaxed and unobtrusive approach to the day. Although we occasionally get asked, Marryoke is a tad cheesy and most definitely not ‘our thing’ here at Boutique Films.
Old Fashioned: (that’s our technical name for boring)
When we say ‘old fashioned’ what do we mean?
If we’re being totally honest here, what we mean is boring and uncreative. A wedding can be filmed in a documentary style. All the major parts are captured, but the way it’s filmed and edited together frankly lacks creativity.
Many new and inexperienced videographers can create a wedding film, but will it capture the real love and emotion of the day? There are so many self-taught videographers on the market who have a very limited skill set, yet they brand themselves as ‘professional wedding videographers.’
The cameras will produce clear HD film, but the actual skill and talent of capturing timeless moments and telling the real story of your day with true emotions is something learned and gained through years of experience.
Cinematic (we’ve broken this down into two sections)
Cinematic Storytelling:
A mix of ‘cinematic storytelling’ and ‘stylised’ is most definitely how we would describe our style here at Boutique Wedding Films and Photography.
A Cinematic style of wedding video is shot and edited more like a movie. It emphasizes capturing the day’s emotion and drama, then piecing it together with a truly unique ‘movie’ style finish.
The camera work of a cinematic wedding video will have much more thought going into the composition of the shots and may feature more movement. The cameraman may use camera stabilization equipment such as gimbals. This can create stunning results that will make the difference between the ‘classic’ and the, cinematic’ styles.
The films are ‘graded’ in the editing process. The editors will tweak and enhance the colours and contrast to make it more film-like. This also removes the ‘camcorder’ feel and look to the finished film.
Voiceovers from some of the more emotional moments of the day are often layered over the top of the film. This, for us, is a significant part of bringing the film alive, mixed with a little slow motion, and it’s a guaranteed tearjerker!
Cinematic Stylized:
Ok, so we kind of made this name up, as it’s easier to describe the difference between the ‘storytelling’ and the ‘stylized’ styles.
For many real high-end wedding videographers, it’s all about a totally ‘cool’ look and finish to the films. Mainly for the more experienced cameraman, they will use their expertise and knowledge to create a super stylish film filled with cool angles and dramatic lighting.
When booking a super cool ‘hi-end artist’ to capture your day, here’s something for consideration. The whole emphasis of the film is that it looks really ‘cool,’ but does it tell the full story and catch all the emotions of your wedding day?
To make your film look super cool they might cut out certain parts of the day or really important people like your parents simply because ‘they don’t look the part.’ At Boutique Films, we balance out the film so you get a really cool-looking film, but all the key moments and important family members are included.
Our Style
First and foremost, we are storytellers here at Boutique Wedding Films & Photography.
Most of the day we blend into the background, shooting mostly in a relaxed unobtrusive style but we will of course guide you when needed. We work with and alongside the photographer who will tend to ‘lead’ the day so your day flows seamlessly.
Our wedding films have our unique cinematic stylized look and finish, but it’s the real emotional moments captured creatively that are the most important to us. This is what we believe makes us stand out in a somewhat crowded market of so-called ‘professional wedding videographers.’
All our team are not only highly experienced in shooting weddings but are all professionally trained in the field of videography. No film packages also include the ceremony and speeches supplied in full. You have the stunning highlight film to share with your friends and family, plus the full ceremony and speeches for you and close family to cherish and hand down through the generations.
