Choosing Your Wedding Photographer: 14 Questions to Ask Before You Book

Congratulations on your engagement! As you start planning what is, hopefully, a once-in-a-lifetime event, you’ll have lots of decisions to make. Aside from booking your venue and finding the dream dress, one of the most important decisions you’ll make is choosing your perfect wedding photographer. Your wedding photos will be a lasting reminder of your special day, so ideally, finding a photographer who can capture all the magic and emotion of the occasion is essential. To help you with your search, we’ve put together a list of critical questions to ask before you book your wedding photographer.

1 Is my wedding date available?

Just so you know – the first thing you’ll want to know is if the photographer is available on your wedding date. Popular photographers can get booked up quickly, so it’s best to enquire about their availability as soon as possible—even if your wedding is booked for 1-2 years!

2 What is your photography style?

Every photographer has a unique style, so finding one that aligns with your vision is important. Whether you prefer traditional, classic poses or candid, documentary-style shots, make sure your photographer’s style matches what you’re looking for. If you’re planning an outdoor or destination wedding, you may want to find a photographer with experience in landscape photography or working specifically with outdoor lighting.

3 Do you have experience shooting weddings at my venue?

Once you know your date is available and you like the style of photography available, it’s essential to ask if your photographer is familiar with your wedding venue. If so, they may know the best locations for photos and how to work with the available lighting. If they haven’t shot there before, don’t be afraid to ask if they’d be willing to visit to scout for photo opportunities.

4 What is included in your wedding photography packages?

On to the important details, the packages are available. It’s important to know exactly what you’re getting for your investment. Remember to ask about the number of hours of coverage included, the number of edited photos you’ll receive, if editing and retouching services are included, and whether albums or prints are included in the package. Some photographers offer print services directly, while others may work with third-party vendors. This will help you compare different photographers’ offerings and ensure you’re getting the best value for your budget – with no surprises!

5 Can we request a list of specific shots to capture?

Don’t be afraid to ask if specific shots can be included; after all, you only hopefully get married once! You may have a unique family heirloom or bridal accessory which you’d like included in your wedding photos, or perhaps you’d just like to ensure that special moments such as the bridal party gift exchange or even a tender exchange with your parents or children are captured. These personal touches are what make your wedding photos so special and unique to you and can be an absolute joy for your photographer to capture too!

6 Will I own my wedding photos?

Understanding the ownership and rights to your wedding images is crucial. Some photographers retain the rights to the images, while others may offer full or limited usage rights.

7 What is your turnaround time for delivering the final photos?

Naturally, after the excitement of the big day, you’ll be eager to see and share your beautiful photos. Be sure to ask your photographer about the timeline for delivering the final images. Our photos take 3-6 weeks, but this can vary for each photographer.

8 Do you charge a travel fee?

If your photographer needs to travel a long distance, I would like to ask about any potential travel fees. I want you to know that understanding all potential costs upfront will help you budget accordingly.

9 Will my images be available to view and share online?

Many wedding photographers now offer password-protected online galleries for viewing and sharing images. It’s worth asking how long these galleries will be available.

10 What happens if you fall ill on the day?

Unfortunately, emergencies and unforeseen circumstances can happen, so it’s essential to ask about the photographer’s backup plan in case they are unable to shoot your wedding.

11 Will there be a second shooter?

A second photographer can help to capture different angles and moments throughout the day. If this is important to you, make sure to ask if it’s included in the package or if it’s an additional cost. A second shooter can also act as the backup photographer on the day!

12 Do you have backup equipment?

Equipment failures can happen, so it’s crucial to know that your photographer has backup gear ready for the day, including backup batteries! A professional photographer should have redundant cameras, lenses, and lighting equipment to ensure the day runs smoothly.

12 Do you have a cancellation policy?

Sadly, life can be unpredictable, and it’s essential to understand refund or cancellation policies in case plans change. Hopefully, they don’t, though!

14 Do you have insurance?

Finally, could you please check if the photographer has liability insurance? This is a must, and it’s important to also check if their coverage extends to their assistants or second shooters.

Check out the photographer FAQ’s section if they have one.
